In brief Gail Wilensky’s professional career combines the analytical skills of a policy researcher, the political insights of an advisor to the Congress and a former Presidential appointee, and the administrative skills of a manager of both large and small organizations.

Dr. Wilensky is the John M. Olin Senior Fellow at Project HOPE, an international health foundation, where she analyzes and develops policies relating to health reform and to ongoing changes in the medical market place. She also Co-Chairs the President's Task Force to Improve Health Care Delivery for Our Nation's Veterans, which covers health care for both veterans and military retirees. Dr. Wilensky testifies before Congressional Committees, acts as an advisor to Members of Congress and other elected officials, and is a frequent speaker for professional, business, and consumer groups.

From 1997-2001, she served as Chair of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission which advises Congress on all payment and expenditure issues relating to Medicare, as well as many non payment issues. Previously, she chaired the Physician Payment Review Commission.

Her previous position was in the White House, serving as Deputy Assistant to the President for Policy Development, where she advised President George Bush on health and welfare issues. She came to the White House after two years as the Administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) in the Department of Health and Human Services where she directed the Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Prior to her service in the Bush Administration, she was Vice-president of Health Affairs at Project HOPE. She also has been a researcher at several research centers and on the faculty of two universities.

Dr. Wilensky is a nationally and internationally recognized expert on a wide range of health policy and financing issues. She has published extensively in these areas and has spoken before hundreds of groups on these and other issues. She has appeared on numerous television programs and is also a frequent commentator on health care events for radio.

Dr. Wilensky has received many professional honors and is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and a member of their Governing Council.

She currently serves as a trustee for the Combined Benefits Fund of the United Mine Workers of America, as a governor of the Research Triangle Institute, as an advisor to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Commonwealth Fund, and as a member on several professional committees and not-for-profit boards. She also serves as a director on several corporate boards.

Dr. Wilensky earned a B.A. in Psychology and a Ph.D in Economics from the University of Michigan.
